The art of rowing on water, practiced by the ancients, is known as rowing. The current form of competitive rowing originated in England in 1829, with the start of the world-famous Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities on the River Thames.
The first state rowing association was formed in West Bengal in 1973, and similar associations in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Orissa were established in 1976.
The Rowing Federation of India was formed in 1976, and rowing was first included in the 9th Asian Games in 1982 in India.
In Uttar Pradesh, the tradition of rowing on various rivers from the Ganges to Raja Banaras was particularly based on the famous peacock boats called "Mayur Pankhies," built on ancient overlapping plank structures. In 1931, Hari Das Manik performed an excellent job organizing the first All-India Invitational Regatta in Benares, in which numerous crews participated not only from the United Province, but also from Calcutta and even Dhaka.
Rowing is one of the oldest Olympic Games: the first Olympic regatta was held in 1900, and women's rowing began in 1976.
